Day 3 of Webelos

Today was one of the most fun and busy days I have ever spent at a Scout Camp. It started at 6:30 in the morning in the pool for the CMR Polar Bear Swim. In order for a Scout or Leader to earn this award, they must attend a 15 minute swim every morning at 6:30 a.m. Normally, this is kind of uncomfortable, but today, it was like taking a bath! I am still surprised by how many showed up.

Breakfast was another personal favorite of mine... Sausage on a Stick... It's basically a Corn Dog, but instead of a Hot Dog, you have a Sausage Link, and instead of Corn Batter, you have Pancake batter around it. I really could eat those almost every day! Anyway, after Breakfast, Pack 35 had a demonstration at the Fish Hatchery. They showed how to feed the little fishes, and even let some Webelos help!

Today's Program was split into seven areas again: Archery, Lake, Handicraft, Nature, Scout Craft, Citizenship, and Pool Games for the 1st year Webelos, and Climbing for the 2nd year Webelos!

I started my walkthrough at Scout Craft. They were teaching the Scouts how to Whip rope, knots, and the care of rope. Good rope is very expensive, and it is important for every Scout to know how to care and repair rope.

Next, I just walked down the next path to the COPE Course. I really wasn't prepared for what I saw there. When I saw the 2nd Year Webelos were climbing... I just thought it was a smaller wall that I hadn't seen... Well, I was wrong. When I walked over to the wall, the kids were like professional climbers! They confirmed everything like they were supposed to, they were all harnessed off, and had helmets, I was pretty surprised, and, if I'm being honest, a little jealous! These guys looked like they were having SO much fun, it was all I could do, NOT to ask to try and join in!

As I was on my way to the Pool, I managed to get a picture of one of the most elusive animals at Camp Mountain Run... The Camp Director! While he is almost always busy, Travis is hard to find at times in the open wilderness.

Now, once I reached the Pool, I saw the Scouts had been divided into two groups. They were practicing using a Buddy Board/Kick Board. They had to swim across the pool with the board in front of them. They all looked like they had a great time!

From there, I went up to Walker Center to check in on Joyce and the Handicraft. Before I got there however, I came across something that anytime I see it in the Wild, I HAVE to take a pic of it. While it is not rare, it still makes for a great picture. It is, of course, the "Tuckered Out Leader". If you see one of these, don't panic, it is totally normal...

Joyce and Bob were still working hard on helping the Scouts get their Kites built...

While Newbie, and Fuzzy were in Citizenship teaching the Scouts about Community Service.

As I was heading to the Lake, and Ranges, I stopped off at Nature to see what they were doing. Nature was playing a game called Fox and Rabbit. The set up of the game, is that kids are paired off by twos, and stand in a circle. There is one Scout who is the "Rabbit", and one other who is the "Fox". The "Fox" chases the "Rabbit" around and the "Rabbit" will try to avoid the "Fox". Then, the "Rabbit" will link on to one of the pairs of kids and become safe, while one of the kids who was safe before, is now the Rabbit... Kind of hard to explain, but REALLY fun to play!

Soon enough, I ended down at the Lake. The kids AND adults were having a blast!

Finally, I arrived down at the Ranges. They were practicing Archery. The Range Assistant, Zane, was fantastic with the Scouts. He showed them exactly how Bow and Arrow should be done.

Last Night was also "Cook in Your Campsite" night. Each Pack was given Steaks, potatoes, and other items and were allowed to do what they wanted.

Some Packs made "Foil Babies"...

Some Packs cut their Ribeye's up and made Stew out of them...

And Others, grilled them like a Barbeque!

Anyway you cooked them, Dinner was GREAT!

After Dinner, there was a party for the BSA's 100th Birthday. There were games, prizes, and lots of Ice Cream. The Order of the Arrow sent some of its members last night, and they not only did a Drumming Demo, they were also the music for Musical Chairs!

After everything was over at the party, there was still one more place to go.. and that's where we started this morning... Because of the heat, the Pool was open for a half hour last night, and that was just what was needed!
